Before    During    After

Brief: Rear garden of a Victorian terrace House, 7m in length. A structured low maintenance garden was required, to enhance the house. The owners were not keen gardeners but were keen to keep a lawn provided it was easy to maintain. They wanted plants that required little or no aftercare.

Solution: To include a lawn with defined shaped edges, the addition of a mowing strip helped to keep the lawn in shape. A decking was created at the bottom of the garden with a trellis behind masking a working area and compost heap. The shaped lawn provided deeper planting areas which were filled with low-maintenance shrubs which will provide year round interest. The side return outside the kitchen was dark and used to store unwanted items, it was dark and uninviting. The fence was given a coat of external stain in a light colour, and the concrete floor benefited from a coating of dove grey gravel, this combined with the new colour of the fence reflected additional light into the area. This was completed with planters echoing the shapes used elsewhere in the garden. The design was completed with generous step from the house which further ties in with the decking area.
